The Godolphin and Latymer School, Hammersmith, London: American Literature 1880-1940 Conference: Keynote lecture on The Great Gatsby

Sarah Vantini, Conference organizer, posted 17 May 2017

At the end of Spring term my L6 A level class helped me to host our American Literature conference. Over 260 sixth form students and their teachers attended, representing 16 schools from London, Bristol and Cambridge. Keynote lecturers were the very popular Professor Nicolas Tredell on The Great Gatsby, and all the way from San Jose University, California, Professor Susan Shillinglaw, Director of the Centre for Steinbeck Studies, on The Grapes of Wrath. Short papers from staff and students on other 1880 to 1940 novels were also much appreciated. Special thanks to G&L's Dr Bickley, Mr Bell and Dr Stevens for their stimulating papers, to Heather Smith for her reading and soundtrack, to Victoria Newell for visuals and to everyone who helped to support this great literary event. It was a sell out success!
